The Blue, the Purple and the Scarlet

Since the late 1980’s I’ve worked with textiles – cloth and dye and printing on cloth. When I began to learn textile techniques at Philadelphia College of Art in the late 80’s my first project was to do fabric lengths which were my interpretation of the scarlet and blue dyes spoken of in the description of the building of the sanctuary in the desert in the Bible. This remained as an unfinished project. After giving a Dvar Torah at my synagogue, Yedidya, in March last year about the “generous heart”, which is described as the necessary ideal for those who contribute to the building of the sanctuary, Mishkan, I started thinking about the unfinished Mishkan project. The artworks exhibited in “The Blue, the Purple and the Scarlet” at “Kol HaOt” in Hutzot Hayotzer, which were produced during the three months of being an Artist in Residence there, are a return to contemplating the colors of the Mishkan. The sanctuary is portable, made for nomads in the desert. The desert is a place of the word, of holiness, of a dwelling made to contain holiness. This people who come from the land of the pyramids and glitter of the pharaohs go into a land of stark nature, to consolidate, to listen to the holy words, to find their own relationship to the holy, and in the starkness of the desert, they discover their own relationship to color and texture. In the building of the Mishkan and its objects, they meditate and pray with devotion, both with their hands and their hearts.

תכלת וארגמן ותולעת שני

מאז סוף שנות השמונים אני עובדת עם בדים שונים בצביעה והדפס ושילוב חומרים. שהתחלתי ללמוד הטכניקות האלה בPhiladelphia College of Art הפרויקט הראשון שלי היה אינטרפרטציה של הצבעי צביעה מוזכרים בפרשת תרומה. הפרויקט נשאר כלא גמור והמשכתי בכיוונים אחרים בתחום.

בעקבות דבר תורה שמסרתי בקהילת ידידיה במרץ לפני שנה על “נדבי הלב” שמוזכר בפרשת תרומה, התחלתי לחשוב שוב על האפשרות להחזור לנושא של צבעי המשכן.

העבודות המוצגות בתערוכה ב”קול האות” בחוצות היוצר,”תכלת ותולעת שני וארגמן”, פרי של שלושה חודשים כאמן אורח שם שבתוכם אני חזרתי לנושא זה.
